What the project record tells us
Permanent installation at Chinati Foundation
The building establishes the encounter
Chinati’s account of untitled (dawn to dusk) describes a project developed around the footprint and situation of a former army hospital, with contrasting wings, scrim, and a planted courtyard. It opened in 2016 after a long development process. This historical work is useful to BAP because the setting is integral to the art rather than a neutral container. Any discussion of comparable conditions should therefore examine movement through the building, changes in daylight, and the relationship between interior and courtyard together.
Which parts of a proposed site would need to remain inseparable from the artwork’s interpretation?

Sculptural intervention within a campus grove
A grove and an engineered support system
Two Running Violet V Forms places blue-violet chain-link surfaces among the eucalyptus trees at UC San Diego. The collection documents its 1983 completion and explains that Jack Brogan devised wire stays to address sagging. This unusually practical detail connects the visual effect to a support system that required refinement. For BAP, the precedent encourages close reading of installation history: the apparent lightness of a work does not remove the need to understand tension, anchorage, and the changing living environment around it.
How would conservation records distinguish an essential visual effect from replaceable support components?

Artist-designed garden at the Getty Center
A garden requires several kinds of authorship
Getty dates the Central Garden to 1997 and identifies plant specialist Jim Duggan as a collaborator in its development. The planting was part of Irwin’s artistic arrangement, making horticultural knowledge relevant to the experience rather than merely a maintenance service added later. BAP can use this historical precedent when discussing landscape commissions that will continue to grow and change. A useful brief would explain how artistic intention, planting expertise, and day-to-day care relate, and how decisions are recorded when a plant must be replaced.
Who would interpret the artistic intent when horticultural conditions require a change?
