Documented artwork / architectural light and landscape installation

untitled (dawn to dusk)

Robert Irwin

Credit as documented: Robert Irwin

Robert Irwin's untitled (dawn to dusk) opened at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa in July 2016. The artist developed it from 1999 around a former army hospital site. A new building follows the earlier C-shaped structure and its relationship to the sloping ground. Raised windows frame views of West Texas, while sky-open antechambers recall the old building's ruined condition. The work combines an interior light installation with a planted courtyard.

Materials and construction

Black and white scrim partitions divide the building's contrasting wings and modulate daylight. Concrete paths, Corten-lined beds, honey mesquite trees and basalt columns organize the courtyard, connecting architectural circulation to changing outdoor conditions.
