Two Running Violet V Forms

Robert Irwin

Credit as documented: Robert Irwin

Two Running Violet V Forms places two elevated, violet mesh structures among UC San Diego’s eucalyptus trees. Robert Irwin responded to the grove’s planted grid and changing light, creating screens that look opaque or transparent as people move along the paths. The work follows a level line while the hillside falls beneath it. Its elevation allows pedestrians to pass underneath.

Materials and construction

Plastic-coated chain-link mesh hangs from stainless steel poles averaging 25 feet high. Jack Brogan handled engineering and construction and designed wire stays to correct sagging. Purple-flowering ice plant was planted below.

Presentation and site context

The Stuart Collection identifies the grove between the Faculty Club and Price Center. Its essay records completion and an opening celebration in May 1983 after extensions to the initial configuration.
