The Vermont: sculpture integrated with a building
Los Angeles Opens Its Heart of Compassion combines an illuminated metallic screen with a lotus-inspired aluminum form at The Vermont in Koreatown. The studio dates the work to 2014 and credits JH Snyder Company as commissioner. Stainless steel, aluminum and LEDs form an artwork integrated with the development’s parking structure and plaza.
When should the artist join the architectural design team to coordinate structure, lighting and public space?

I AM A MAN Plaza: memorial, text and landscape
The 2018 Memphis memorial honors the sanitation workers’ strike and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Garten’s studio describes working with landscape architect John Jackson and public workshops organized by the UrbanArt Commission. Community-selected historical and contemporary text is incorporated into the plaza’s marble entry gates.
