Documented artwork / wind-responsive architectural façade

Wind Silos

Ned Kahn

Credit as documented: Ned Kahn

Wind Silos transforms the International Trade Center parking façade in Charlotte into an undulating metal screen. Ned Kahn describes perforated, corrugated stainless steel that conceals parked vehicles while permitting ventilation. A continuous band of wind-activated disks follows the silo-like contours, reflecting changing sky and sunlight. CENTRIA’s manufacturer brochure credits the architectural collaboration of Kahn and Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, general contractor Rodgers Builders, and dealer SECO Architectural Systems, and names Bank of America as commissioner.

Materials and construction

The manufacturer describes individually pivoted disks and blue lighting at night. Its project timeline is May–September 2005, whereas Kahn’s project page says completion in 2006. Published façade length and disk diameter also differ. These are source-specific descriptions of the same named façade; neither set is silently corrected or treated as a verified as-built specification.
