Documented artwork / suspended community-painted metal installation

Western Tapestry

John Fleming

Credit as documented: John Fleming with participating Market community painters

Western Tapestry turns a bare concrete wall along Western Avenue at Pike Place Market into a suspended, curving field of color. John Fleming drew the base palette from the market's produce, fish and crafts, then invited community members to add their own designs. His account records approximately 200 workshop participants. The Market Foundation places the finished work beneath the Desimone Bridge and reports that it was ready for the MarketFront opening on June 29, 2017.

Materials and construction

Aluminum strips hang above the sidewalk and LED lighting changes the nighttime appearance. The artist reports 1,700 strips, while the foundation's completion account says more than 1,600; neither statement is silently substituted for the other.
