Urban Garden Rail

Saya Woolfalk

Credit as documented: Saya Woolfalk

Saya Woolfalk's Urban Garden Rail connects two elevated subway stations to East New York's community gardens. MTA dates the work to 2017 and locates it at Pennsylvania Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue on the 3 line. The imagery celebrates neighbors cultivating former vacant lots together and the local circulation of their produce. Gardeners appear against patterned backgrounds that evoke the neighborhood's varied cultures and cooperation across generations.

Materials and construction

Two layers of painted stainless steel panels run along platform windscreens. The composition links the represented gardens to real farms visible nearby, allowing the station surroundings to participate in the imagery as passengers look beyond the panels.
