Research notes for project planning
What the project record tells us
Chrysler Museum installation
A fictional machine still needs real fabrication
Woolfalk’s ChimaTEK presentation at the Chrysler Museum combined video, a Hybridization Machine and a Combustion Chamber within a speculative account of human and plant transformation. The museum credits its Glass Studio with making the chamber to the artist’s specifications. This is a useful production precedent: a convincing invented world can depend on precisely defined relationships with skilled fabricators. The commissioning brief should distinguish the fiction visitors encounter from the instructions makers require. Which drawings, samples and approvals will communicate the intended object to each fabrication partner?

Collection research can continue through programming
The Newark Museum’s account connects Field Notes from the Empathic Universe with Woolfalk’s research into its collections, including botanical materials and American landscapes. An associated program brought writers and guided meditation into the installation’s setting. The precedent offers two linked commissioning possibilities: access to an institution’s holdings during development, and interpretation that continues after the objects are installed. Both need people and time allocated to them. Which collection specialists and program collaborators should participate early enough to shape the experience?

Participation can be a defined creative action
For Hybrid Digital Home at the ICA Boston in 2018, Woolfalk’s project documentation shows visitors creating patterns and filling a line drawing through MIT’s Scratch platform. The interaction gives participants a specific task within the larger visual world. As a planning precedent, it suggests describing audience agency in concrete terms rather than simply calling an installation interactive. A host can then plan facilitation, access and technical support around that action. What can visitors change, and how will they understand the effect of their contribution?
