Documented artwork / monumental transit gateway sculpture
The Traveling Man – Walking Tall
Credit as documented: Brad Oldham and Brandon Oldenburg
Walking Tall is the largest of three Traveling Man sculptures associated with Dallas's Deep Ellum gateway. Brad Oldham and Brandon Oldenburg won DART's design competition in 2007 after a mural-covered railroad underpass was removed for the station. The guitar-headed figure connects the neighborhood and rail stop through a walking pose and polished bird companions. DART explains that the birds also function as seating. The figure's brushed stainless-steel skin is assembled with visible monobolt rivets, giving the surface an industrial character distinct from the birds' mirror finish.
