How this work was made and presented

Full-size Falkirk Kelpies, unveiled 2014; retrospective published 2024

A landmark commissioned within a canal landscape

The Helix’s tenth-anniversary account identifies Scottish Canals as the commissioner of the full-size Kelpies at the link between the Forth and Clyde Canal and River Carron. The 2014 sculptures reference Clydesdales that worked the waterways and surrounding land. Scott credits engineering, fabrication, lighting and landscape disciplines in their delivery. This makes the Falkirk pair a useful commissioning precedent for integrating a monumental work with a wider public place and its local history.

Separate one-tenth-scale touring maquettes

Touring maquettes are a separate scale and material

The artist documents a touring exhibition of Kelpie maquettes at one-tenth scale, describing galvanized-steel works three metres high, or four metres including their plinths. Those measurements and the touring designation belong to the maquettes, not to the monumental Falkirk pair. For a prospective host, identifying the edition and scale is the first practical step: an inquiry about The Kelpies alone does not establish which physical objects, supports or installation arrangements are being discussed.

Is the inquiry for the touring maquettes, another authorized edition or a new commission, and which dimensions include the plinth?
