Artist description of the linear Sonic Runway experience

Make distance part of listening

Sonic Runway’s project account describes a corridor of illuminated arches that converts live audio into patterns traveling at the speed of sound. As visitors move along the corridor, they see light patterns recede or approach while hearing the synchronized beat. The installation consequently offers a spatial lesson as well as an audiovisual spectacle: the route itself is part of the work. For comparable commissions, test views along the route rather than only from the front.

Documented City Hall Plaza configuration in San Jose

Design the corridor for public performance

San Jose’s presentation describes a City Hall Plaza version with twenty-five arches extending across 432 feet. Audio inputs at both ends supported performance from either direction, and the city’s cultural affairs office planned activation around the installation. These details show how a civic plaza setting can give a light corridor a program beyond its default sequence. For planning, the useful questions concern where performers and listeners gather, how sound reaches neighboring uses, and who coordinates the changing program across the plaza’s other activities.
