Documented artwork / immersive artificial-sunlight installation

Sola / Tunnel of Light

Squidsoup

Sola / Tunnel of Light uses an array of collimated light sources to simulate sunlight and produce unusual shadows. The first presentation outside Guy’s Hospital supported staff, patients and visitors; a later gallery work developed its cloud-and-light imagery.

Research notes for project planning

How this work was made and presented

Guy’s Hospital, London, March–April 2021

Artificial sunlight outside a hospital

Squidsoup’s original Sola / Tunnel of Light used arrays of directed light to suggest a distant sun. Commissioned by Hope+Glory and sponsored by Hyundai, it was first shown outside Guy’s Hospital in March–April 2021 for staff, students, patients and visitors. The account documents an artistic intention to offer respite; it is not evidence of a measured clinical benefit or current availability.

A later cloud installation is a distinct development

The 2023 Sola development combined the earlier light work with research into smoke and mist, premiering at Propyard in Bristol. Visitors could enter cloud-like forms and disturb them through movement. A host considering the original Tunnel of Light should establish whether this later environmental treatment is included; atmospheric effects introduce a separate venue and operating discussion.
