Documented artwork / site-specific landscape sculpture

Schunnemunk Fork

Richard Serra

Credit as documented: Richard Serra

Richard Serra embedded four steel plates across a ten-acre field at Storm King. Their placement makes the slope legible as visitors move between separate horizontal edges. Serra developed the composition through topographical maps, consultation with a surveyor, and walks with Clara Weyergraf-Serra. The title connects the branching arrangement to nearby Schunnemunk Mountain. Storm King identifies the work as a site-specific commission dated 1990–91.

Materials and construction

Each plate is eight feet high and 2½ inches thick, but only about one-third of its length remains visible above ground. The buried lengths and eight-foot terrain changes are essential to the composition; the listed plate sizes are not visible elevations.
