Documented artwork / temporary interactive biometric light installation

Pulse Park

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Credit as documented: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer; programming by Conroy Badger

Pulse Park translated visitors' heartbeats into moving light at Madison Square Park's Oval Lawn. The Conservancy's temporary exhibition ran from October 24 to November 17, 2008. A sensor at the lawn's north end measured participants' pulses, which traveled sequentially through perimeter spotlights. Lozano-Hemmer connected the work to Roberto Gavaldón's film Macario and to minimalist musical composition, extending his earlier Pulse Room investigation into an outdoor public setting.
