Documented artwork / figureless sculptural installation

Monument in Waiting

Theaster Gates

Credit as documented: Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates made Monument in Waiting during summer 2020 for the Parrish Art Museum's Field of Dreams exhibition. Reclaimed plinths and granite tiles assemble a public forum without a commemorative figure. Its vacant supports ask viewers to reconsider which histories and people monuments honor, responding to the removal of Confederate and colonialist monuments. A later installation occupied Drexel University's Korman Family Quad from June 2022 through July 2023; that presentation has ended.
