What the project record tells us

Walker Art Center permanent installation

Salvage and new construction have separate histories

Black Vessel for a Saint places a salvaged statue from Chicago’s demolished St. Laurence church within a cylindrical brick structure at the Walker Art Center. Gates’s project account credits architects Muller and Muller and describes the industrial production of the bricks. The work brings an existing object into a newly designed setting, making the relationship between preservation and construction central to the commission. What provenance, conservation assessment and architectural coordination would be needed before a salvaged object could become part of a new public work?

Stony Island Arts Bank exhibition

An archive can generate a public environment

When Clouds Roll Away drew on the Johnson Publishing archive and furnishings for a 2024–25 exhibition at Stony Island Arts Bank. Gates’s description proposed a fictional publishing headquarters across the building, connecting material display with spaces for social and cultural activity. The historical proposal demonstrates how an archive can shape a setting beyond conventional cases and labels. It also suggests separating stewardship obligations from the freedom of an artistic installation. Which original materials can be used, handled or reconfigured, and which require protective exhibition methods?

Adaptive cultural building

A cultural building needs an operating model

The Stony Island Arts Bank’s program history records Gates’s acquisition of the building in 2013 and describes its evolving mix of art, community activity and hospitality. Its 2026 reopening notice adds another chapter rather than establishing that every announced activity occurred. As a planning precedent, the building points toward the continuing work of programming and stewardship after capital improvements. A cultural project needs responsibilities that survive its opening event. Who will determine the ongoing uses, public access and resources for keeping the place active?
