Documented artwork / architectural mapping installation

Land and Time

Susan Narduli

Credit as documented: Susan Narduli / Narduli Studio

Narduli Studio created Land and Time for the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City in 2011. The work uses mapping to connect visitors' immediate surroundings with the forces that shape them. Outside, etched topographic lines record the site's terrain before construction. Inside, a digital mural at the entry assembles views of Utah's mountains and canyons. Changes of scale and viewpoint invite visitors to consider their relationship with the wider landscape.

Materials and construction

Reflective and non-reflective faceted surfaces accompany the imagery. Together, the exterior terrain drawing and interior mural extend the museum's stated interest in the natural world across the building threshold, rather than constituting a single freestanding object.
