Documented artwork / outdoor solar-spectrum shade installation
Healing Shade
Credit as documented: Peter Erskine
Healing Shade is Peter Erskine’s group of five prism-equipped shade umbrellas in the Healing Garden at the Lucy Curci Cancer Center in Rancho Mirage. Sunlight passing through the prisms creates rainbow patterns in the planted outdoor setting. The artist identifies laser-cut prisms and sustainably harvested Brazilian ironwood supported by a galvanized-steel frame as the installation’s materials. His résumé gives Healing Shade its own 2003 entry and describes the structures as permanent. This garden work is physically separate from Healing Light in the center’s lobby: the documented shade-umbrella system is not the lobby’s heliostat-and-motorized-prism system, and the two titles are retained as separate artwork records.
