Documented artwork / solar-spectrum lobby light installation

Healing Light

Peter Erskine

Credit as documented: Peter Erskine

Healing Light is Peter Erskine’s solar-spectrum installation for the lobby of the Lucy Curci Cancer Center at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. The artist’s résumé lists it separately as a permanent work from 2003. A heliostat positioned 107 feet north of the lobby directs sunlight toward motorized prisms mounted at roof level. Those prisms send two large rainbow beams into the interior, where their shape, color and position vary through the day and year. The work’s physical account therefore includes both exterior optical equipment and an interior light experience. It is distinct from Healing Shade, Erskine’s separately named set of prism-equipped garden umbrellas at the same facility.
