Documented artwork / monumental tire-and-steel sculpture

Foci

Chakaia Booker

Credit as documented: Chakaia Booker

Foci is Chakaia Booker’s towering composition of reused tire rubber supported by a stainless-steel armature. Grounds For Sculpture explains that overlapping tire pieces wrap the structural skeleton, applying Booker’s cutting, folding and assembling methods at monumental scale. Storm King commissioned the work in 2010 for its fiftieth anniversary. The later Grounds For Sculpture record identifies a loan on the Great Lawn, with courtesy to the artist; it supplies no loan commencement date.

Materials and construction

Grounds For Sculpture’s medium line lists only stainless steel, while its own explanatory text identifies the rubber covering. Its published height is thirty feet. The Atlanta University Center library exhibition instead lists thirty-two feet, with the same eight-foot width and depth. The discrepancy is retained as a published measurement difference rather than silently assigning separate editions.
