Documented artwork / glass tower and ceiling installation

Fireworks of Glass

Dale Chihuly

Credit as documented: Dale Chihuly

Fireworks of Glass rises from the lower level through the central space of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Dale Chihuly completed the permanent installation in 2006. Its forty-three-foot tower contains more than 3,200 hand-blown pieces and can be seen from every museum level. A separate floating ceiling contains another 1,600 pieces. Below the tower, an interactive exhibition introduces visitors to glassmaking through molded forms and a virtual glassblowing activity.

Materials and construction

A revolving seat lets visitors study the floating ceiling from underneath. The museum's two glass-piece totals describe different components and should not be substituted for one another. The tower height likewise does not describe the full room or the ceiling's span.
