Documented artwork / overhead reflective installation

Fata Morgana

Teresita Fernández

Credit as documented: Teresita Fernández; design collaboration with SITU Fabrication; fabrication by Adirondack Studios; structural engineering by Thornton Tomasetti

Teresita Fernández suspended a reflective canopy above paths around Madison Square Park's Oval Lawn. Fata Morgana used golden, perforated metal surfaces to mingle visitors' reflections with foliage and moving sunlight. Its title refers to a horizon mirage, while its horizontal arrangement shifted attention toward occupied walkways. The Conservancy records the exhibition from June 1, 2015 to January 10, 2016; it is a completed temporary presentation.

Materials and construction

The commissioned installation extended for 500 running feet in six sections. Fernández designed it with SITU Fabrication; Adirondack Studios fabricated it, and Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering. The linear measurement describes the combined canopy, not its height or an area.
