Documented artwork / large-scale abstract steel sculpture

Crete

Charles Ginnever

Credit as documented: Charles Ginnever

Charles Ginnever’s Crete is a COR-TEN steel sculpture in Laumeier Sculpture Park’s collection, given by Adam and Judy Aronson. The work dates to 1976–78 and belongs to the artist’s ten-part Hellenic series, whose titles refer to Greek places, people and myths. Its island name accompanies an angular structure intended to be experienced from changing viewpoints. Laumeier explains that walking around the sculpture makes triangular openings appear to close while others open, disrupting the expectation of one stable perspective. That changing visual reading gives the steel composition its sense of movement. The park places Crete in its look-without-touching category, so the perceptual experience described by the museum involves moving around the work rather than climbing on or handling it.
