Madison Square Park commission, 2012

Seating changes how the light is experienced

Madison Square Park’s Buckyball catalogue describes nested geodesic spheres with wooden reclining benches. Those benches made looking upward a deliberate part of the installation, giving the changing light a different viewing rhythm from a sculpture passed at walking speed. The project is a precedent for designing the audience’s posture as well as the artwork. A comparable commission could reserve comfortable observation space before finalizing paths, planting or the placement of adjacent activity.

Development and programming of the 2012 commission

Program development belongs in the commission schedule

The Conservancy’s catalogue describes Buckyball’s long development and Villareal’s work with a small production team. Custom software allowed the artist to shape color, intensity and timing while generating changing sequences. The artist’s own record identifies the result as a temporary, site-specific installation. Together, these accounts suggest a planning distinction between fabricating a luminous structure and developing its behavior for a particular place. Programming needs on-site adjustment to the relationship between the sculpture and its nighttime surroundings.
