What the project record tells us

Bridge-scale light art · San Francisco Bay, California

The Bay Lights: a site-specific infrastructure partnership

Villareal’s project archive describes the original Bay Lights on the western span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, first illuminated in March 2013. It credits arts organization Illuminate with helping bring the project about and records the original installation going dark in March 2023. That archive is historical evidence, not a statement of operating status today.

Software-controlled LED sculpture

Software is part of the artistic medium

The Smithsonian explains that Villareal’s LEDs are controlled by custom programs using mathematical rules to produce evolving patterns. His practice is therefore relevant to briefs where the sequence and behavior of light matter as much as the physical arrangement. Long-term planning should address the control system as well as the light fixtures.
