Documented artwork / walk-through translucent outdoor installation
Bamboo Cinema
Credit as documented: Teresita Fernández
Bamboo Cinema is Teresita Fernández’s walk-through installation presented in Madison Square Park during the 2001 Target Art in the Park exhibition. Transparent plastic poles form a circular maze, with staggered heights and diameters creating walls that reach eight feet. The poles are silkscreened in bright green and yellow vertical stripes rather than made from living bamboo. Their arrangement changes how visitors see the park and one another as they move through the concentric passages. Public Art Fund describes the shifting bands as a shutter-like device that breaks movement into a flickering sequence, connecting bodily movement with early cinematic effects. The exhibition ran from May 31 through September 30, 2001. Public Art Fund organized that season for City Parks Foundation with Target sponsorship; those roles are not interchangeable with ownership or a present-day commission offer.
