Documented artwork / Skyspace light installation

Air Apparent

James Turrell

Credit as documented: James Turrell

Air Apparent frames the sky above Arizona State University's Tempe campus through a fifteen-foot-square opening. James Turrell's forty-five-foot canopy is supported around a perimeter seating space, where polished black granite benches orient visitors toward the aperture. Four hundred eighty LED fixtures create distinct dawn and dusk programs, changing the relationship between the illuminated structure and the perceived color of the sky.

Materials and construction

ASU records the unveiling on October 17, 2012. Architect Will Bruder collaborated on the structure, while Christy Ten Eyck designed the surrounding Halle garden. Diane and Bruce Halle supported the project. The reported 32,000 pounds belongs to the quarter-inch steel canopy plate; it is not a complete installation weight or foundation load.
