What the project record tells us

Temporary public-park exhibition

An open form invites movement around it

For Walks of Life, Madison Square Park placed Caldera on a gravel area where the bronze’s open structure and three points of ground contact could be experienced at close range. The conservancy described visitors passing beneath it. This is a useful precedent for a sculpture that defines an interior space as well as an exterior profile. A buyer should establish whether a proposed object is intended for that kind of access, then coordinate routes, surfacing and interpretation around the approved visitor experience.

Grouped bronze forms on a park lawn

Profiles appear as the viewpoint changes

The Walks of Life catalog presents Points of View as three columns whose changing contours suggest profiles as viewers move around them. The grouping occupied Madison Square Park’s Oval Lawn. A frontal rendering cannot convey every reading. Compare approach views and intervals between elements, and assess whether planting or temporary events would obstruct the movement needed to discover those changes.

Version and casting history

Record both the model and the cast

The catalog dates Mixed Feelings as 2012/2014, distinguishing its conception from the bronze made for the park exhibition. Its twisting vertical form contrasts with nearby open Caldera and grouped Points of View. When evaluating an edition or later cast, request documentation of the precise version. Record model date, casting date and exhibition history separately rather than collapsing them into one year.
