How this work was made and presented

2022 studio project and debut configuration

A sculpture within an interactive landscape

Jen Lewin Studio describes Ursa Minor as a twelve-foot polar bear built from illuminated, mirrored panels. Its light choreography refers to the constellation associated with Polaris, while its first presentation placed the figure within The Last Ocean, an interactive field inspired by Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf. The bear therefore offers a useful precedent for programming a recognizable central sculpture together with a participatory ground plane. For planning, the surrounding landscape deserves its own circulation and interpretation brief, rather than being treated as decoration around the figure.

SCOPE Miami Beach 2022 announcement

Separate the installation from its event program

The studio’s SCOPE Miami Beach announcement described Ursa Minor and The Last Ocean outside the fair, alongside a separate booth of wall works. It also scheduled an artist talk at the outdoor installation. That distinction matters when reading exhibition photographs: an outdoor landmark, an indoor presentation and a public conversation can belong to one program without sharing the same footprint or audience pattern. A comparable host could use this precedent to plan interpretation and gathering space around the sculpture as distinct program components.
