Documented artwork / interactive kinetic architectural installation

Urban Imprint

Nassia Inglessis

How this work was made and presented

A/D/O by MINI, Brooklyn, NYCxDesign 2019

Outdoor space becomes an architectural experiment

STUDIO INI identifies Urban Imprint as an outdoor kinetic installation for A/D/O by MINI in Brooklyn during NYCxDesign 2019. That setting matters: the work was presented within a design program where the surrounding architecture and the visitor’s body could be understood together. It offers a useful precedent for a host using outdoor space as a place to test an idea about space. For planning, the invitation to enter and move should be developed with the site’s normal circulation and the time visitors can spend exploring.

STUDIO INI’s conceptual and material account

Make the visitor an agent in the architecture

In its Urban Imprint text, STUDIO INI contrasts fixed urban boundaries with an environment shaped by human presence and movement. The studio describes concrete and glass as familiar materials made responsive, allowing individuals and groups to alter the space through their actions. The relevant planning lesson concerns the clarity of that relationship: visitors need an opportunity to notice how their bodies affect their surroundings. A host could therefore evaluate the interaction from the participant’s viewpoint, including the transition from approaching the work to recognizing its response.
