Documented artwork / temporary paired cloud sculptures

Unsui (Mirror)

Sanford Biggers

Credit as documented: Sanford Biggers

Sanford Biggers created Unsui (Mirror) for Desert X 2025 as a pair of tall, sequin-covered cloud forms. The surfaces changed with desert light and wind, connecting the sculpture's appearance to the weather around it. Desert X relates the cloud imagery to Biggers' study of Buddhism and to ideas of movement, freedom and connection. The commission was developed with Buckhorn Public Arts for the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center in Palm Springs.

Materials and construction

The organizer describes forms exceeding thirty feet in height. Their placement engaged the history of Desert Highland's Black community and displacement from Section 14. Desert X now explicitly states that the 2025 exhibition is closed and this installation is no longer on view.
