Two-spirit Earth & Hallowed Mound

Tanya Aguiñiga

Credit as documented: Tanya Aguiñiga

Tanya Aguiñiga created Two-spirit Earth and Hallowed Mound as two temporary commissions for the 2019 Candlewood Arts Festival in Borrego Springs, California. Installed at Galleta Meadows, they used hay bales covered with clay and natural materials gathered from the desert. The artist connects the first form to nature's dualities and the second to fertility. Their shapes drew upon the surrounding land and the cycles through which materials return to it.

Materials and construction

Both forms were designed to direct moisture and encourage growth, allowing weather and biological change to transform the sculptures as they gradually disappeared. The Under the Sun Foundation sponsored the festival; the artist's account does not establish the forms' surviving condition today.
