Documented artwork / monumental sculpture

The Ziz

Donald Lipski

Credit as documented: Donald Lipski

The Ziz rises from a pool near the entrance to Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona. Donald Lipski's 2009 sculpture adapts the ascending form of Constantin Brancusi's Bird in Space through an explicit baseball reference: a line of stitches runs along the elongated shape. Its height of sixty feet six inches matches the distance between a baseball pitching mound and home plate. The artist describes the work as both a ballpark landmark and an anchor for the surrounding mixed-use development.
