The Seven Wonders

Mel Chin

Credit as documented: Mel Chin with contributing children

Seven Wonders presents Houston's history through a group of seven tall columns at Sesquicentennial Park. Mel Chin's installation organizes its imagery around agriculture, energy, manufacturing, medicine, philanthropy, technology and transportation. Children's drawings supply the imagery, giving young contributors a role in the city's public account of itself. The seven themes connect different forms of work and civic life within a single ensemble.

Materials and construction

The Downtown Houston district identifies seventy-foot pillars, each constructed with one hundred fifty children's drawings etched into stainless-steel plate. The drawings are constituent images within the columns, rather than a count of separate freestanding artworks.

Presentation and site context

The columns flank the park's Promenade and Preston Avenue Bridge above Buffalo Bayou. The district classifies the work as a permanent installation.
