Documented artwork / interactive light installation

The Pool

Jen Lewin

A field of circular platforms responds to touch with changing color. Custom code and a mesh network coordinate the light effects, creating a shared composition as visitors walk, jump, or dance across the installation.

How this work was made and presented

Work developed in 2008; studio exhibition history through 2024

Choreography emerges from shared control

The Pool organizes circular touch-responsive platforms into a shared field rather than offering a single control point. Lewin’s custom programming and mesh network let visitors’ movements generate changing patterns together. The studio traces the work to Australian tidal pools and lists presentations including the CU Art Museum in 2013 and Lumenaura in Aurora in 2024. Those distinct contexts make it a reference for discussing how an interactive work relates to museum programming or an evening public-art event.

Aurora, Illinois, 2024 festival lease

A documented municipal lease package

Aurora’s passed January 2024 resolution authorized The Pool for its October 4–November 1, 2024 light festival. The record describes 106 pads in a 50-foot-diameter installation and a $98,000 package covering the lease, licenses, service, estimated shipping, installation and dismantling staff, and staff travel. This is a useful historical example of how a municipality documented scope beyond an artwork rental fee. It is not a current price, quote or promise of identical terms elsewhere.
