Fabrication and material development for the 2022 work

The material supply was part of the artwork

For The Last Ocean, Jen Lewin Studio worked with South Africa’s Ocean Plastic Technologies to recover ocean and ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities. The studio describes grinding and melting this material into components and rethinking its fabrication process over multiple years. Marjorie Rice’s Type 9 pentagonal tiling informed the platform geometry. The environmental subject is therefore expressed through both the interactive ice-field imagery and a documented material-development collaboration.

Stargazer Lawn: environmental interpretation through participation

Vivid Sydney’s 2023 record locates The Last Ocean at Stargazer Lawn on Hickson Road. The event describes visitors moving across the work and changing its illuminated colors, with interpretation connecting the installation to John Weller’s work protecting Antarctica’s Ross Sea. This named presentation provides a useful example of pairing an interactive landscape with an environmental story. It establishes a historical venue and audience experience, not the dimensions or operating specification for another site.
