That Profile

Martin Puryear

Credit as documented: Martin Puryear

That Profile is Martin Puryear’s open metal sculpture designed for the Getty Center plaza in Los Angeles. Getty dates the full-scale object 1999 and describes six slender legs supporting a network of welded, sandblasted stainless-steel tubes. Bronze strands secure its joints. Seen from different positions, the grid can appear flat or rounded; the framed sky and landscape are as important to the encounter as the metal itself.

Materials and construction

Getty connects the abstract design to Richard Meier’s surrounding architecture. Storm King’s account concerns a separate 1997 maquette made small enough for Puryear to carry in a suitcase when meeting collaborators and fabricators. Its steel-wire-and-wood medium and inch-scale measurements belong to that model and are not specifications for the Getty sculpture.
