Documented artwork / monumental abstract steel sculpture

Tatlin's Sentinel

John Henry

Credit as documented: John Henry

Tatlin's Sentinel is John Henry's monumental painted-steel composition in Dallas's arts district. The title acknowledges Vladimir Tatlin and the Constructivist tradition. Its large uprights form spaces that viewers can stand within, connecting the sculpture's scale with the artist's interest in cathedral architecture. The artist archive dates the work to 2001 and describes fabrication over a year at the Chattanooga studio. It subsequently appeared in the 2002 New Monuments exhibition at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis.

Three tractor-trailer loads carried the sculpture to that exhibition. The archive reports a height of 101 feet and mass above sixty tons. After the year-long exhibition and a further studio display, the work was installed permanently in Dallas; an exact Dallas installation year is not supplied.
