Documented artwork / paired suspended transit sculptures

stroke and crossing

Beliz Brother

Credit as documented: Beliz Brother

Beliz Brother's paired sculptures connect Mercer Island Station with the island's boating history. At the west entrance, stroke suspends a dense cluster of paddles and oars above the stairs. Its references include canoes, rowboats, sculls, kayaks, paddleboards, longboats and racing shells. At the east entrance, crossing balances a simplified boat outline above a wave-like form. Together they recall water travel before a bridge connected the island to the mainland.

Materials and construction

Sound Transit documented the artist supervising installation in 2022. Its later account names both works and dates installation photographs to May. Brother connected the forms to historical photographs and her own regular experience of Lake Washington. No structural material specification or overall dimensions are established by these reviewed accounts.
