San Juan Heal

Nina Chanel Abney

Credit as documented: Nina Chanel Abney

San Juan Heal places the history of San Juan Hill on the facade of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Abney's figures, words and symbols recall the predominantly Black and Brown community displaced during mid-century redevelopment. Featured residents include healthcare pioneers Edith Carter and Elizabeth Tyler and musicians James P. Johnson and Thelonious Monk. The project makes a site's displaced community visible within the architecture that came to occupy it, using Abney's bold figurative language to encourage further curiosity.
