Documented artwork / architectural mural

R&R

Nina Chanel Abney

Credit as documented: Nina Chanel Abney

R&R addresses the displacement and erasure of Black communities through gentrification. Nina Chanel Abney developed an immersive mural whose pictorial narrative asks viewers to consider what urban renewal removes as well as what it introduces. In the statement published by Miami Worldcenter, she connects the work to histories that may survive only through archival recovery. The mural seeks to encourage curiosity about the communities that occupied the area previously and those that remain nearby.

Materials and construction

Miami Worldcenter dates the mural to 2022. Abney explains that the dark, tunnel-like passage beneath the building shaped her thinking about sacred spaces and the stories associated with them.

Presentation and site context

The work occupies a passage within the Miami Worldcenter development. That architectural context is integral to its concept; the source does not establish a precise mural footprint or indoor/outdoor classification.
