Quake

DeWitt Godfrey

Credit as documented: DeWitt Godfrey

Quake stands on a pedestrian and bicycle path west of the MIT campus in Cambridgeport. The Cambridge Arts Council commissioned DeWitt Godfrey's work through its percent-for-art program in connection with the path's 2015 extension westward to Erie Street. The city's public-art tour locates the sculpture at Merriam Street and Waverly Path. Its grouped Corten steel cylinders change apparent density as a viewer moves: broad, substantial forms seen from one direction become thin ellipses from another.

Materials and construction

The municipal tour describes the tension between rigidity and flexibility in the cylindrical forms and invites visitors to experience acoustic effects from the center. These spatial and acoustic qualities make the route through the work relevant to its interpretation.
