Documented artwork / site-specific landscape installation
Park of the Laments
Credit as documented: Alfredo Jaar
Alfredo Jaar's Park of the Laments creates a contemplative enclosure within the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park in Indianapolis. Newfields states that the work closes seasonally from November 1 through April 1. An underground concrete passage leads visitors toward a planted, stepped space and then up a central stair. Nested squares combine limestone-filled gabion baskets with indigenous vegetation and wooden seating. Commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the 2010 installation invites reflection on historical atrocities through an experience of enclosure, transition and emergence.

The collection dimensions describe the complete landscape installation. Soil, limestone, gabion baskets, concrete, plants and wood belong to this integrated site rather than a freestanding transportable sculpture.
