Documented artwork / walk-through sculptural maze

Pac-Lab

Will Ryman

Credit as documented: Will Ryman

Will Ryman’s Pac-Lab invites visitors to choose their way through a sculptural maze of colored walls and passages. The 2017 work translates the structure of a video game maze into an outdoor installation at bodily scale. Ryman modeled the walls in clay before the final cast-resin, steel-and-paint work; their hand-shaped character contrasts with expectations of digital precision. Art Omi describes the primary colors as evoking childhood art-making and Piet Mondrian, and interprets the maze as a reflection on consumer culture and daily choices. The work was shown at Parc de La Villette in Paris in 2018 before its documented 2020 presentation at Art Omi’s Sculpture and Architecture Park in Ghent, New York.

Materials and construction

Ryman publishes dimensions of 4 feet high, 37.5 feet wide and 50 feet deep. The artist lists the Art Omi presentation from July 1, 2020 to present; Art Omi’s dedicated page instead gives July 21, 2020 in its When section. This source discrepancy is retained, without treating either date as an independently confirmed installation start or asserting current loan status.
