Documented artwork / sculptural installation

Oculus

Olga Ziemska

Credit as documented: Olga Ziemska

Oculus paired two human profiles covered with hundreds of tree cross-sections. Mirrored eyes reflected the landscape into the faces. Olga Ziemska created the work for Of the Earth, exploring continuity between bodies and natural forms. The profiles stood among the Arboretum's Beech and Maple collections. Varied wood sections juxtaposed the structure of trees with the familiar outline of human anatomy.

Materials and construction

The Arboretum describes each profile as ten feet tall. The tree sections varied in size. Exhibition-wide references to steel and reinforced concrete are not treated as an exact component list for Oculus.

Presentation and site context

The exhibition ended on March 1, 2025. The Arboretum states that Ziemska owned the sculptures and removed or relocated them; the former display site is historical, and the destination remains unestablished.
