Documented artwork / outdoor geometric sculpture

Madrigal

Sanford Biggers

Credit as documented: Sanford Biggers

Sanford Biggers created Madrigal for MIT's Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building, designed by SANAA. The outdoor sculpture draws six quilt patterns from his Codex practice into folded geometric forms. Its musical title refers to voices singing in counterpoint, connecting the work to the building's purpose. MIT identifies a 2024 acquisition and support from Percent-for-Art funds and Robert and Sara-Ann Sanders. Surface tiles incorporate architectural remnants and milled textures suggesting fabric.

Materials and construction

The museum lists dimensions of 210 × 149 × 75 inches but describes the sculpture as over eighteen feet high. Those measurements are inconsistent; the numeric dimensions remain attributed without converting them into a reconciled height.
