Lookout

Martin Puryear

Credit as documented: Martin Puryear, working with structural engineers, vault specialists, kiln builders and masons

Lookout is Martin Puryear's permanent, site-specific commission in Storm King's North Woods. Its twenty-foot brick form curves from an open arch toward a dome through nine progressively inclined segments. The work introduced brick into Puryear's practice while acknowledging the Hudson Valley's brickmaking history. Ninety circular apertures frame fragments of woodland and sky; an indicated position in the paving allows a visitor to see through all of them. The southwest-facing opening also frames distant Schunnemunk Mountain.

Materials and construction

Thin-shell masonry combines brick with concrete and cobblestone; fiberglass-reinforced concrete tubes form the apertures. Puryear collaborated with engineers, Guastavino-vault specialists, kiln builders and brick- and stonemasons.

Presentation and site context

Storm King describes unpaved approaches with steep sections and an accessible cart service; visitors should consult its current access information.
