Documented artwork / distributed transit sculpture installation

Life Underground

Tom Otterness

Credit as documented: Tom Otterness

Tom Otterness distributed bronze figures throughout New York's 14th Street subway station at Eighth Avenue. MTA's 2001 installation includes workers, oversized tools, enormous feet and an alligator emerging from a sewer. The small characters appear beneath stairs, around pillars, on benches and railings, and overhead. Their unexpected positions turn circulation through the station into a sequence of encounters with scenes of labor, money and city folklore.

Materials and construction

Public Art Fund arranged an earlier plaza presentation beginning November 1, 1995, before the subway placement. Its reference to eight sculptures belongs to that presentation account; MTA describes scores of figures, so eight is not treated as the complete station inventory.
