Documented artwork / illuminated inflatable sculpture installation

Intrude

Amanda Parer

Monumental illuminated rabbits use a familiar, playful animal to introduce environmental questions. The work contrasts the rabbit’s cultural appeal with its impact as an introduced species in Australia.

Artist interpretation of Intrude

Use a welcoming image to carry a difficult idea

Amanda Parer frames Intrude around a tension within the rabbit’s image: a familiar, appealing animal can also represent environmental disruption in Australia. The enlarged figures make that tension difficult to overlook, turning their scale into part of the work’s argument. This provides a useful interpretive precedent for a public artwork that first attracts through recognition and then opens a more complex conversation. A host could decide how to introduce the environmental context without overwhelming the immediate, playful encounter that brings people close.

Bunjil Place Plaza, June 2019

An illuminated installation extends a cultural precinct

The City of Casey’s annual report records Intrude across the Bunjil Place Plaza in June 2019, with giant inflatable rabbits illuminated in the evening. The council identifies it among the venue’s arts and community events and reports that it attracted thousands of visitors. This documented presentation shows the work functioning within a wider cultural precinct program. For planning, the useful lesson is to consider the relationship between outdoor encounters and nearby activities, including whether evening illumination creates an additional reason to stay or return.
