Four Faces

Michael Stutz

Credit as documented: Michael Stutz

Four Faces brings four monumental heads into a shared sculptural arrangement at Texas Tech University. Michael Stutz uses woven bronze straps to give each face an open structure, combining the weight of the material with visual permeability. The university describes subtle differences of age, gender and ethnicity among the faces. Shared scale, material and treatment hold those differences together, allowing the installation to address individual identity and common experience within the same group.

Materials and construction

The collection dates the work to 2013 and identifies bronze. It connects the woven-strap method to a technique Stutz began developing in the 1990s.

Presentation and site context

The university locates the work on the west side of Talkington Hall. Its interpretation connects the large public forms with the more intimate experience of recognizing individual facial differences.
